Supporting Healthy Eating Habits: Tips for Families

A child sits on a blanket outside with toys and watermelon; grass and a stone wall are seen in the background. Supporting Healthy Eating Habits: Tips for Families was published by NAEYC in the journal Teaching Young Children.  Written by a registered dietitian, this resource outlines seven tips for helping babies (who’ve started solid foods), toddlers (who’ve moved on to table foods), and preschoolers develop healthy eating habits. One profound statement from the article is that “children get nutrition over days and weeks, not individual meals.” It’s also important to consider portion sizes. A little one’s stomach is much smaller than an adult’s. Nationwide Children’s Hospital provides a handy chart about appropriate servings for older infants, toddlers, and preschoolers entitled “Toddler Nutrition: How Much is Enough?Download a PDF of the NAEYC article here.
